Autologlyphs

“What is an autologlyph?”, you may wonder.  Simply put, an autologlyph is a a visual representation of a mathematical concept using the word itself. The presentation of the letters that make up the word demonstrate its definition.

Here’s a simple example we can all appreciate:

The term “autologlyph” was coined by Henry Segerman, and most examples I’ve seen were designed by Henry as well.

You definitely need a bit of a math background to understand some of them.  Henry has many at his website—- do yourself a favor and check some of them out!

Falling somewhere between ambigrams, autological words, concrete poetry and graphic design, but with a definite mathematical slant, these seem to be a new artform.

Given my penchant for math, meta, and clever things, I suspect Metaficionado will be featuring some of Henry’s designs in the future!

Disclosure: Henry’s a postdoc at my university, and one of my teachers, too.

“What’s it called when you make a noun into a verb? Oh right, verbify.”

From an email I wrote today (one sided)

  • Me: And yes, we can wear western-ware. Or western-wear? Like it's a 'ware' or like you 'wear' it? I don't know. Should I capitalize "Western"? Should I put the quotation mark inside or outside the question mark?
