Yesterday I watched the Music Learning Club rehearse at the Arthouse. It was part of an exhibit called Rehearsal at the Astoria by Graham Hudson. In this piece, Hudson recreated the architecture of London’s Astoria Theater.

Continuously activated by musicians throughout the course of the exhibition, Hudson’s installation is essentially a living, breathing sculpture. Musicians are intrinsic to its existence and their performances are part of the artwork. Hudson’s caveat, however, is that this Astoria’s stage only be used for rehearsals, not formal concerts or performances. Furthermore, all rehearsals are open to the public, which allows for a new perspective on the creative process and plays with the dynamic between the audience and performer.

It’s always fun to watch MLC perform or practice. They specialize in covers and trade instruments depending on the song and their mood. Just before I had to leave to catch a movie, they played Pulp’s “Common People.” So much fun.
Music Learning Club is Nick Snell, John-Mike Reed, Allison Moore, Matt Grusha, Vinh Ngo, Dakota Smith, Letty Evans and Mikey Rogers.

I know it’s kind of a cop out, since I’m, like… in MLC… but you do have to admit rehearsing in a band as part of an art installation is pretty meta.GPOYM!
